TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

What is it? Legendary off-roader

When is it available? On sale late 2023

Biggest changes? First edition with retro styling cues, electric power steering

Fleet appeal? Defender alternative, mild hybrid from 2025

HISTORY REPEATING

From launch, there will be a ‘First Edition’ model, limited to 3,000 units. The biggest difference is the inclusion of round headlights, a nod to the Toyota BJ, which signalled the company’s journey into off-road vehicles over 70 years ago. Since then, Land Cruiser has amassed more than 11 million sales in 170 countries.

TECH UPGRADE

New Land Cruiser retains its body-on-frame construction and now sits on Toyota’s GA-F platform, to give an improved off-road experience. The frame is 50% more rigid than the outgoing model, with overall frame rigidity improved by 30%. The new car is also the first Land Cruiser to use electric power steering. The adoption of EPS means less kickback when travelling over rough surfaces and smoother, more direct steering.

POWERTRAIN GAINS

Drivers will have 201hp available from the Land Cruiser’s 2.8-litre turbodiesel. This engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic box, which enables loads of up to 3,500kg to be towed. In early 2025, Toyota says the car will be electrified, courtesy of a 48V mild hybrid system.

INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS

There are five- and seven-seat options available and the design, according to Toyota, “evokes the strength and functionality of an authentic off-roader”. Apparently, that means a horizontal instrument panel and switches that have been specifically shaped for easy operation, especially when venturing off-road. Visibility has been improved with deeper side windows.

VERDICT

As off-roaders go, it’s difficult to beat the Land Cruiser with its impressive pedigree over generations and proven ability away from the Tarmac. The latest version takes the game on from a design and technology perspective and also may have some Defender drivers thinking about their options.
