Let’s make a personal pledge for 2022

By David Savage, associate vice president, UK and Ireland, Geotab. We’re coming to the end of the year. How it’s flown. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the weeks fly by.

It’s at this time of year that we naturally reflect on what has happened over the past 12 months – and what next year will bring. The business highlight at Geotab this year was undoubtedly our participation at COP26 and its singular focus on sustainability.

We’ve signed The Climate Pledge, committing to net-zero by 2040. We’ve also published our first-ever Sustainability Report to ensure that we can monitor our progress year on year towards that goal.

It’s now time for all of us to make our own personal commitment to helping advance our sustainability objective. It may be a small step, such as cycling to work or turning down our heating by a notch or two.

Our business objectives need to be more robust. After all, transport accounts for 24% of direct CO2 emissions. Almost every company has its own sustainability objectives, no matter how large or small they are. Transport emissions are one of the first areas to tackle.

The automotive sector is already on board. At COP26, the UK joined 24 countries, alongside major automotive manufacturers, who pledged to end the production of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles by 2040. Meanwhile, the UK and Ireland have committed to the widespread adoption of EVs as a means to reach their emission targets.

If we all took the same approach, then we too can make a contribution to a cleaner future. So, make your own pledge for 2022.

It may be one small step, but together, we can make a mighty leap.
