CARS ON THE HORIZON

Six of the best

There’s no shortage of new electric models (and brands) coming onto the market in 2026. John Challen picks out half a dozen

BMW iX3
Leapmotor B05
Kia EV5
Polestar 5
Nissan Leaf
Volvo EX60

BMW iX3

A fresh design inside and out for the Bavarians’ electric vehicle lineup is hotly anticipated. Meanwhile, big batteries are a big deal to many drivers and the BMW iX3’s 108.7kWh unit is one that aims to please them. With the ability to cover nearly 500 miles on a single charge, the iX3 will become the UK’s longest-range EV (until the next one comes along).

Leapmotor B05

The IAA Mobility show in Munich earlier this year saw Leapmotor announce the next phase of its expansion, when it revealed the B05 electric C-segment hatchback to the world. More models will follow next year, but the B05 will be an attractive proposition and likely to be highly specced and competitively priced. The car will sit on the latest generation platform (LEAP 3.5) and is expected in the second half of the year.

Kia EV5

Continuing to bolster its electric vehicle lineup – and filling in all the numbers – the EV5 SUV slots nicely into the already impressive battery powered portfolio. The Korean brand is touting the car’s interior space, advanced technologies and theoretical driving range (Kia is saying around 320 miles will be available from a full battery) as reasons why drivers should opt for its latest model.

Polestar 5

Another manufacturer with an EV range that is growing nicely, Polestar will broaden its lineup again in 2026 with the arrival of the Polestar 5. The new car has performance – 884hp and 1,015Nm have been confirmed as impressive power outputs on the grand tourer – on its side, as well as advanced technology. The car features a bespoke aluminium platform, inhouse-developed motor and 800V electrical architecture.

Nissan Leaf

A UK-built car for the UK, the Nissan Leaf’s story began in 2011 and was touted (by Nissan) as “the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle”. When the latest version of the car arrives in the UK it will face plenty of competition, but has a 386-mile range (WLTP), plenty of interior space (including 437 litres in the boot) and a host of tech features on its side.

Volvo EX60

So new, there’s not yet an official image, just a teaser shot of Volvo’s next electric SUV. The EX60 promises more miles from the battery than any other product in the Swedish company’s portfolio, along with the debut of a state-of-the-art platform. A “groundbreaking user experience” is also going to be on offer to drivers of the EX60, which will begin production in “the first half” of 2026.
