NAMES AND NUMBERS
The DS 4 is dead; long live the DS N°4! Continuing the new brand identity set by the flagship N°8, DS has revealed the next model to get an updated moniker and mid-life refresh. There’s an all-electric version offering up to 279 miles (WLTP), as well as a plug-in hybrid offering, which boasts a combined 225hp and 360Nm, as well as up to 50 miles (WLTP) in electric-only mode. A 1.2-litre 48V hybrid version is also available.

THE FAB FOUR
Across the N°4 range will be four different spec grades, giving drivers plenty of choice: Pallas; Pallas+; Étoile and Étoile Nappa. Pallas is exclusive to the all-electric E-Tense model and comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, LED headlamps and full LED rear lights and acoustic laminated front side windows. Pallas+ adds in components such as a heat pump and voice recognition, while Étoile drivers get an extended head-up display, powered front seats and much more. The range-topping Étoile Nappa adds in Nappa leather and heated steering wheel and front seats.
ELECTRIFICATION FOR THE NATION
The all-electric N°4 E-Tense’s battery has a net capacity of 58.3kWh and features “nickel-enriched chemistry, thus optimising energy efficiency while maintaining perfect compactness”, according to the French manufacturer. The combined powertrain generates 213hp and 343Nm of torque and can be replenished, via a rapid charger, from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

FRENCH FANCY
DS is going for an ‘avant garde’ design, featuring a completely redesigned and flatter front-end, incorporating a black grille with a distinctive light signature. This illumination innovation stretches across the width of the car’s bonnet, with a lit-up DS logo sitting at the centre. The rear of the car also gets a makeover to provide a place “where elegance meets technology” apparently. Drivers will be the judge of that, but there are LED tail lights with a dark chrome cover and a strip finished in gloss black.
Inside, there’s a dual-screen set-up (a 10.25-inch driver display and 10-inch central screen), which is set around high-quality fabric, Alcantara or leather, depending on the model.
VERDICT
Brands such as DS face tough competition from various angles, not least the influx of Chinese companies offering arguably better value for money than some legacy manufacturers. But DS has never shied away from a challenge and dares to be different. In the case of the N°4, it could have a credible alternative to the norm, which could appeal to a lot of drivers. The full range of powertrain options is a sensible way to go – maximising interest from across the driver spectrum.
