Welcome to

Crowded house
With so many changes and new automotive brands entering the market, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up. With what seems like an endless procession of Chinese car companies, coupled with governmental incentives such as the Electric Car Grant, drivers are faced with more options and, therefore, more decisions to be made. If there is a tipping point for the number of new models being added into the market, we could be on our way to the peak because, from a distance, it doesn’t appear a viable situation for all concerned.
One look at the SMMT’s registration data for September 2025 shows three-digit numbers for some legacy manufacturers. There are a variety of reasons, depending on individual brands, but I’m sure there is some major planning going on at HQs. On the flip side, there’s very positive news for new entrants from China (and also existing manufacturers from Korea!) who are already making a big impression as the country moves away from ICE, picking up big market shares already.
Will more and more electric vehicle models help or hinder the situation? I mean, the stable door has been busted open and the horse has clearly bolted on that one, but it’s still worth pondering. It could – or maybe should – be good news for fleets, because many of the new models coming through are EVs, which means the potential to save money, take advantage of lower taxes and also tick the sustainability box. But then uncertainty around some others might have a knock-on effect within the business with existing arrangements and relationships.
Previously, I've been quick to look objectively past criticisms of the electric vehicle industry, saying that the vehicles and infrastructure are in their infancy and this period is unprecedented when it comes to the evolution (it’s closer to a revolution, in my opinion) of the automotive sector. However, it feels like we are on the cusp of a new phase as we head towards the end of the ICE age and so shouldn’t be surprised at any shift in the landscape. If you’re a fan of greater choice, you’re in for a real treat over the next few years!
Enjoy the issue.
