Raising professional standards in the van sector
FORS Concession Director, Geraint Davies, is passionate about road safety, compliance, sustainability and all things road transport
The role of van operators, particularly owner-van drivers, has never been more critical to the world of logistics and transport. Owing to the rise of e-commerce and the demand for rapid deliveries, the number of self-employed van drivers in the UK has grown exponentially, but alongside this growth comes a pressing need to raise professional standards across the board.
As a sector, van operations have historically faced less stringent regulatory scrutiny compared to their larger counterparts in fleet management, who must comply with O-Licence requirements. But this doesn’t mean that owner-van drivers should operate without the highest levels of professionalism and safety. The van sector, particularly those engaged in last-mile deliveries, is crucial to our economy’s smooth functioning. It is imperative that drivers, whether running one van or multiple vehicles, maintain high standards in safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
This is where raising professional standards comes into play, and it’s something we must all take seriously. Regardless of the size of the operation, professionalism should always be at the heart of any transport business. From ensuring the roadworthiness of vehicles to continuously improving driver competence, the pursuit of excellence should be an ongoing effort.
In my role as concession director at FORS, I have seen first-hand the positive impact that structured best practice can have on fleet operators. It is my strong belief that self-employed van drivers can benefit equally from adopting these higher standards. When we as an industry focus on continuous improvement, the benefits are clear: fewer road incidents, improved efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced business opportunities.
However, it’s essential to acknowledge the unique challenges that owner-van drivers face. Many are running single-vehicle operations, juggling business management alongside the demands of daily driving. Time and resources are often stretched, and navigating complex regulatory frameworks can seem daunting. That’s why I’m pleased to share that FORS has developed a new, tailored solution for owner-van drivers.
We have introduced a FORS Bronze accreditation specifically designed for self-employed van drivers who do not hold an Operator Licence. This initiative offers a low-cost, simple-to-understand route to achieving accreditation, providing recognition for those who are striving to deliver the best in safety and efficiency.
By adopting FORS standards, owner-van drivers can not only enhance their safety and operational efficiency but also differentiate themselves in a competitive market. As we continue to roll out this initiative, I firmly believe that raising professional standards across the van sector will benefit everyone – from the drivers themselves to the customers they serve. With FORS, we aim to make this journey as accessible and rewarding as possible.
