It is over a year since Farizon, the commercial vehicle division of large Chinese manufacturer Geely, made its debut in the UK. The most recent addition to the company’s range is the V7E, a smaller, affordable urban-focused electric medium eLCV. We will bring you a test of the van as soon as one is available.
In the meantime, we haven’t previously had an opportunity to drive the largest SV model, the L3H3. A load capacity of 13.0m3 makes it smaller than some of its electric 3,500kg GVW rivals such as the Ford E-Transit and the large Stellantis electric vans. Run a tape measure over it and the SV L3H3 is 5,995mm long, 1,980mm wide and 2,500mm high. For the load area, this means a load floor length of 3,190mm, maximum width of 1,795mm with 1,387mm between the wheelarches. Farizon offers a choice of battery, either 83kWh or 106kWh. This gives a gross payload, including driver, of 1,045kg or 1,035kg respectively. Again, this is a bit less than some rivals but offers a good usable payload. As with other Farizon models, the load floor height of 550mm makes climbing in and out of the load area easy.
As we have come to expect from Chinese brands, the Farizon L3H3 is well-equipped. Equipment includes automatic door locking, front and rear parking sensors, electric parking brake with auto hold, central locking, keyless start, double passenger seat, load area lighting, PVC load floor, heated steering wheel, ventilated and heated driver and passenger seats with four-way manual adjustment for the driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, automatic LED headlamps, electrically adjustable door mirrors and a weight monitoring system.

There’s also a comprehensive set of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, predictive and forward collision warning, blind-spot detection, 360-degree surround view and driver monitoring.
This comprehensive list may have something to do with the standard drive-by-wire system fitted to the SV. There is no mechanical link from the steering wheel to the front wheels or between the brake pedal and the brakes at the wheels. No matter how many back-up systems there are (SV has dual redundancy built in), it still makes some people cautious. Since most airline passengers think nothing of getting aboard an airliner with fly-by-wire controls where the cockpit controls are not directly connected to the engines or control surfaces, that may seem like an over-reaction. Out on the road, there is nothing to remind the driver about the drive-by-wire system. We are all used to electric power steering systems, which have been around for some 30 years and the SV feels no different. That said, we’ve noted before that ADAS systems, such as lane keeping assist, can be intrusive and many drivers might prefer to switch them off.
Where the brakes are concerned, we are now used to brake assist systems where additional emergency braking is applied if we are not braking with enough force, so brakes are computer-assisted in modern vehicles, even with a conventional braking system. One item that many will find useful is the on-board weighing system, which will show the weight of the van and load at the touch of a button. Part of our test was carried out loaded and it was reassuring to know that we stayed on the right side of the law.
Our test van had the larger 106kWh battery, which, with a range of up to 247 miles provides a competitive distance. We weren’t able to put that to the test this time but we have driven smaller SVs before over a distance and not found the range to be an issue. Things are not perfect with the UK’s charging network, particularly where larger vehicles are concerned but we were able to use public chargers without much difficulty. The charging port is mounted on the front driver’s side wing.
Anyone used to driving large vans won’t find the SV L3H3 any more challenging to drive than any other large van and, inevitably, it is very similar to an automatic behind the wheel. As with many of its rivals, the driver has a digital instrument display immediately in front of them and a larger central screen for other functions in the centre of the dashboard. There are dashboard buttons for commonly used features so no scrolling through screen menus to find what you want.
The large Farizon SV makes a good case for itself and has a lot to offer, but there are a number of electric choices in the same size and price range.

VERDICT
The Farizon SV in all sizes is well equipped, a neat design and easy to drive. Lane keeping assist can be intrusive, but drive by wire is not obvious when driving.
